Ilê Aïyê

(AFRO-BRAZIL)

The first 100% Afro percussion group from Salvador, the Ilê Aiyê group revolutionized Bahian music and “re-Africanized” its carnival. A legendary formation that has become a source of inspiration for many Afro-descendant personalities in Brazil, such as its godfathers Gilberto Gil, Margareth Menezes and Carlinhos Brown.

From the recording of one of their tracks by Gilberto Gil (on the album “Refavela”), to the song by Caetano Veloso which pays tribute to them, the prodigious notoriety of Ilê Aiyê has increased over time. Five decades after its beginnings, the training, with its 3,000 members, is today considered a “cultural heritage of humanity” and continues to be a source of inspiration for the diaspora and new generations.
